The abbreviation HRV officially stands for High Rider Vehicle although sometimes referred to as Hybrid Recreation Vehicle. The HR-V was introduced to cater for the demand for vehicles with the benefits of SUVs (in particular its bigger brother the Honda CR-V) such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, along with the maneuverability, performance and fuel economy of a smaller car (such as the Honda Civic). Its main competitors at the time include the Toyota Rav4 and the Land Rover Freelander. Known as one of the earliest low emissions vehicles (in terms of nitrogen oxides) and unique character, the HR-V is now considered one of the first original crossover SUVs. Originally designed as the "Wild and Joyfull J-WJ" concept vehicle and exhibited at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1997, the HR-V emerged as a futuristic and lightweight cross-country vehicle in 1998. The Honda HR-V was soon put into production due to its popularity, and marketed toward a younger demographic as the "Joy Machine" in 1999. The HR-V was shipped to Europe with either a 1.6L SOHC or a four-wheel drive SOHC VTEC engine. An automatic continuously variable transmission gearbox was also an engine option, however, the main criticism of the HR-V was the lack of a diesel engine option. The three door versions were discontinued in 2003 and five door versions in 2006. Unofficially, the Honda Crossroad (2008) is the follow up to the HR-V. The Real Time 4WD system comes from the Honda CR-V and uses utilizes a Dual hydraulic Pump Rear Differential where the 4WD system is hydraulically activated when the front wheels lose traction. The HR-V also uses enhanced drive shafts and suspension. Variations were produced for Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Pacific Rim and for its home market of Japan. The HR-V was revised in 2002 with some exterior styling changes and a new interior. Ahead of its time in terms of design for pedestrian safety, the HR-V seats four people and includes modern safety features such as ABS brakes with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), dual SRS (supplemental restraint system) airbags, as well as other features such as electric mirrors, electric windows, folding rear seats, power steering, heat absorbing windows, air conditioning, front fog lights and a rear spoiler housing an LED brake light array. They are extremely reliable and can deal with urban streets as well as long journeys vet well (eg London to Stockholm in 2 days cruising at high speed - done several times so far). I have thrashed all of my cars with my driving style, but they perform uncomplainingly. The things you have to watch out for are all minor: CVT Judder (3 out of my 4 HRVs had this) but which can be fixed simply by changing the transmission oil every 50,000 km, costs GBP 75 and the transmission performed perfectly after the 1/2 hour oil change which must be done by the garage as you need a special filler device. You don't need to spend a fortune for a new gearbox! Body dents - the metal is quite thin but it does look great in metallic silver. The Rear hatch latch gets stuck (2 out of 4) - just needs oiling Small bits of plastic fall off the interior of one of them, but I never found out where from and it didn't affect the car at all. Replace the standard bulbs with 50-100T brighter Phillips ones for better vision Passenger side window air wind noise on 1 HRV cleared up by replacing window seal Tyres kept going down - solved by having a garage scrape inside of alloys to remove reaction residue from rubber/alloy reaction after Km 70,000 Stiff gear level if the car is left un=driven for 2-3 months, I haven't found out why yet. Tyre wear is fine, one one car has had the same winter tyres all year round for 5 years. Pirellis best. Handling is superb especially the 3 door model. I used the Low Gear Setting often in Sweden in Winter 2009 when there was snow for 6 months and -20 degrees weather - really useful to have 4WD (normally self -switchable 2WD which helps economy) Thrashing the CVT gets great performance, albeit a bit noisy I have packed my entire apartment in the car, it has amazing carrying capacity The rear seats fold forward and backward - really useful The 4 door has a less choppy ride than the 3 door, but does not have roller skate handling. One HRV helped fetch a horse-rider with a broken thigh on a hill that the ambulance couldn't reach - so not too shabby off road when pressed. I could afford any car under £40k but I choose the HRV because it is does everything at any time that I want it to. Hope that is useful. Report this review I've really tried my HRV out this last winter (2009/2010) not once has it let me down, started first time every day in temperatures of -10C. Climbed up our steep drive in almost a foot of snow, traction on snow covered/un-gritted roads as sure as in normal conditions. Only one day didn't risk driving it that was when all local roads were covered in black ice/freezing rain. Otherwise, the serious snpow was no problem. Report this review We are on our second HR-V. Both have been pre registered with delivery mileage only. Our Green 2002(52) model was traded in for a black 2005(55) VTEC. All later models have the VTEC engine and the extra power is a bonus although if ever a car could do with an 1800cc engine this is it. If you are thinking of buying a HR-V get one with a VTEC engine. Report this review The Honda HRV 1.6i 4WD is a great car to have and to look at. It stands out from the crowd and there's never a danger of pulling up next to your twin at the traffic lights. Enjoyable and smooth ride on road (or mild 4WD offroading), spacious layout inside for 4 and a small-medium dog, easy to park, and reliable. Report this review I bought my Honda HRV Sport Manual 3 door in 2001 with about 20,000km on it. Now, seven years later it has gone 140,000km without a single problem. I service it regularly, according to service recommendations. I have used my HRV in all conditions, from light snow to hot dry dirt roads. No problems ever. It has plenty of zip up most hills, but if they are really steep, 1st is always required. I also use my HRV as a mobile office on the job, letting it idle for long periods with the air conditione ... Report this review My girlfriend has got a Honda HRV which she has had just over a year. We have replaced the back tyres twice and we find it skips in bumps. We have replaced the stabilisers at the rear and a brush which was worn, we have now spotted that the rear passanger wheel is slightly pointing to the drivers side and is wearing the tyre from the outside. Has anyone experienced this or knows what could be causing this. Please add a comment. Report this review I bought my Honda HRV in 1999 and we reached 130'000 km without the slightest problem and very low maintenance cost. I am very impressed and satisfied with this car and hope I can drive for much longer. This car has climbed many mountains and never let me down. I am disappointed that this great vehicle is not produced any longer. I would buy the same model again. Report this review I have had my Honda HR-V VTEC since 2003 from new, and have done nearly 114,000 miles, all over Europe. Outstanding vehicle, very reliable, and if kept serviced regularly needs no additional maintenace. Do not buy the Honda recommended (Yokohama) tyres, as they wander all over the place. Buy Kumho (from Korea). I got 66,000 miles out of the first set I used and have now done 40,00 on the current tyre, with little sign of ware! Report this review I have owned my Honda HR-V from new (2001) it has done 43,000 miles I am a careful driver, have never abused the car (i.e. driven it off-road or thrashed the guts out of it). It has been regularly serviced but alas, I have just been informed that the noise it has started to make when the engine is hot is the power steering. It now needs replacing and Honda have informed me that it will cost nearly £700! Has anyone else had this problem or am I the only unlucky Honda owner with this problem ...
