It reviews a Honda Civic 2.2 CTDi Diesel ES specification car, covering all aspects of buying a new or used Honda Civic with some useful before you buy tips from UK Honda dealers. The headlining of the car can rattle on 06 registration cars fitted with the panoramic roof. UK Honda dealers are aware of this problem and can fix it. The firm ride of the UK Honda Civic can emphasize potholes in many road surfaces. We were advised by Clover Leaf Cars to buy a ES model Honda Civic fitted with 16 inch alloy wheels as cars fitted with 17 inch alloy wheels (including the EX specification car) have a firmer ride. The Honda dealers advice was good as a new Civic fitted with 16in alloys has good ride quality. All new model Honda Civic cars are supplied without a space saving spare tyre as it has a "get you home" flat tyre repair kit. This saves on vehicle weight and increases the available boot storage space. A space saver spare tyre can be purchased separately at around �100 +VAT. UK Honda dealers are not known for generous new car discounts, but close to month end they can offer cheap deals on new Honda Civic cars, when the spotlight is on monthly sales targets.Often Honda dealers will offer new car discounts of �300 to �500 on a new Civic so it's worth haggling for the best deal and trade-in price. Since used Honda Civic cars (2006 '56 and '07 plate) are only �1500 less than new car prices, it is often worth considering purchasing new as many used Honda Civics are ex-Enterprise hire cars. Driving & Handling - Road Test A road test of a Honda Civic 2.2 diesel reveals that the car is great to drive, offering excellent handling and road holding with little body roll when cornering. However, the Civic's steering doesn't offer quite the same 'hands on feel' and 'connection with the road' as the new shape Ford Focus, feeling a little more imprecise and vague at times. The new Civic has a fully adjustable driving position with a number of seat and steering column adjustments. The sporty 6 speed manual gearbox fitted in our 2.2 CTDi ES is easy to manage and has sensibly spaced gear ratios (6th gear being around 35mph / 1000rpm). The refinement and performance of the Euro Honda Civic 2.2 CTDi engine is simply amazing. With 140PS at 4000rpm and 340Nm or torque at just 2000rpm the refined Common Rail diesel engine has twice low speed torque of the 1.8 V-TEC, which means it feels significantly faster on the road, with 0 to 62 mph taking just 8.6 seconds. On the road the car feels very fast with excellent acceleration and mid range torque a plenty. This together with excellent fuel economy and low emissions, makes the new Honda Civic diesel an attractive small family car to buy. The new Type R Honda Civic (launched in March 2007) has performance that matches the old Type R Civic on paper, with 0 to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds. Driving and Handling : New Honda Civic Review < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Comfort & Refinement Even though the new Honda Civic has a firm ride, it still proves very comfortable on all but the worst of UK road surfaces (remember our buyer's tip about the 16 inch wheels though!). The seats in the new Civic are supportive and comfortable and have full range of height and pitch adjustment. Road noise is well suppressed and engine noise from the refined CTDi Common Rail 2.2 litre diesel engine is only really noticeable in first two gears at low speeds. The UK built Honda 2.2 CTDi diesel engine is extremely quiet and refined, with virtually no diesel rattle even when started from cold. In fact, the Honda Civic diesel is so quiet that it's almost impossible to tell (at idling) that it is an oil burner; beating even the Ford Focus TDCI which we previously thought had the best small car diesel engine refinement. Wind noise has never been a problem in the Civic and the car remains quiet and refined even at high motorway speeds. Dashboard Layout The all new dashboard on the Euro Honda Civic uses relaxing blue backlighting with state of the art holographic display technology being used for the trip computer and central information displays. The new Honda Civic Type R has red instrumentation backlighting. The digital speedometer is mounted just below the windscreen, in direct eye line. This makes it easier to watch your speed without taking your eyes off the road. Most controls on the Civic dashboard are easy to use, but some are a little fiddly and complicated - the wiper stalk controls being one example. Keep the user manual handy for reference! Comfort and Refinement : New Honda Civic Reviews < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Emissions & Green Rating The UK Honda Civic Diesel 2.2 CTDi is a 'green car' with a super clean engine and low CO2 emissions. In fact, it's probably one of the best small family cars with outstanding performance and a class leading 'green rating'. At just 135g of CO2 per km, it qualifies for C Band UK car tax (currently just �120 per year). Green Rating : New Honda Civic Review < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Best New Features Electric Panoramic Glass Roof (standard on the Honda Civic ES) is a nice feature letting in much more natural light into the cabin for both front and rear passengers. A switch mounted near the roof courtesy light controls the roof blinds as required. The panoramic roof is pictured here. ECO Display (six green LED lights) is useful in helping the driver to reduce fuel consumption. The more ECO lights are illuminated the lower the instantaneous fuel consumption of the car. 2 ECO lights seems to equate to a fuel economy of around 40mpg; 4 ECO lights to around 50mpg fuel economy and 6 ECO lights for over 60mpg. In practice, it is challenging to find a cruising speed that keeps more than 2 ECO lights illuminated and pretty much impossible around town on the urban cycle, unless you change into 5th and use very light throttle settings. Then 70mpg is just achievable from the new Civic even at 32mph on a flat road. Dual Zone Climate Control - standard on the 2007 Honda Civic ES and EX allows separate driver and passenger comfort zones with independent climate temperature control. The temperature control for the passenger is conveniently located on the passenger armrest. Magic Seats - add to seating flexibility and load space practicality. The central fuel tank in the new Honda Civic allows the rear seats to be folded flat to make a huge load space in the boot. The boot floor also has a bottom storage compartment which can be used for additional luggage if no space saving spare tyre is purchased. Km/h to mph Switch - A dashboard mounted switch allows easy change over from mph to km/h for driving abroad. All digital information related to vehicle speed, range and fuel consumption is changed to km / litre. Driver's Information Computer - The new Civic has a well designed Driver's Information Computer which provides instantaneous fuel consumption in the form of a bar graph, digital readout of average fuel consumption (by trip), range to empty, trip distance and average speed (since last reset). The driver computer is toggled by pressing the "I" button on the steering wheel. Electric Door Mirrors - The Honda Civic is a wide car at 2.046m (including door mirrors) so the electric door mirrors (standard on the new Civic ES and EX) come in useful for parking the vehicle in a small garage. Engine Start Button - Without doubt, it's cool to start the engine using the red button on the dashboard, even if it does take some getting used to! Rear Door Access - The Civic's rear doors open to nearly 90 degrees to improve access for disabled passengers and to accommodate large items. Annoyances Known Faults and Reliability - There have been several problems with my Civic which are detailed in Reliability, Faults and Problems below. Cramped Rear Seats - Whilst the Honda Civic is a small family car it's less adept at carrying 5 adults in comfort on long journeys. 3 adults can get somewhat cramped in the back seat. The middle seat is very narrow and the seat cushion is raised for additional discomfort! Interior Rattles - These were a problem on the 55 and 06 registration Honda Civic. Factory modifications on the 2007 Civic (56 registration cars) seem to have resolved rattles from the headlining on the ES and EX model (cars fitted with sliding glass roof). Exterior Rattles - On my Civic, another rattle seems to be caused by the external plastic cover at the base of the windscreen which is in contact with the glass. This noise then transmits into the car through the windscreen, especially when the car goes over bumps in the road. Rear Visibility Problems - I am pleased to say that I've had no problems with rear visibility when reversing my new Honda Civic into parking spaces. The rear visibility is quite adequate for purpose and the large door mirrors make up for any slight visibility restrictions. However, I find the rear window mounted spoiler (half way up the glass) more annoying on the motorway where it significantly restricts the view of traffic behind. Fuel Economy - The fuel economy of the new Civic is really rather disappointing. If you drive with a heavy right foot then don't expect much more than 40mpg and cold start short journeys will result in further reduce fuel economy, often as low as 35mpg in winter. Honda's published fuel economy figures for the new Honda Civic don't seem to tally with any form of real world driving. Nor, in fact does the fuel computer which shows the economy to be around 6mpg better than it really is! In Car Entertainment System The 15W stereo fitted to the Honda Civic works well with good radio sensitivity even though the radio aerial is internal - in the rear window glass. Sound quality is reasonable although not class leading and 4 speaker are fitted. Separate tweeters provide excellent clarity of treble sounds. The CD / MP3 player reads most CD-R and CD-RW media types and a 12 digit alphanumeric display shows individual track names on MP3 CD's (where programmed). Individual MP3 folders can be selected by name using the manual tune knob on the radio. Radio, CD MP3 Player: New Honda Civic Reviews < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Build Quality Problems The build quality of my particular 2007 UK specification Honda Civic was initially marred by problems with interior trim rattles. The hard ride of the car makes the problem seem worse. Based on my initial ownership experience, Honda have some way to go to eliminate annoying rattles and squeaks from the cabin of the new Civic. A road test revealed several problem areas (particularly on 55 and 06 registration ES and EX cars) including a poorly designed and fitted interior headlining with more rattles emanating from the internal black plastic surround on the rear hatch. My Civic also had a particularly annoying resonance (buzz) from behind the dashboard at an engine speed of around 1900 rpm (70mph in 6th gear). That said, the interior finish of the car is very good with high quality materials used throughout. Build Quality : New Honda Civic Review < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Diesel Civic Performance & Economy You'll find that the Honda Civic 2.2 CTDi engine has excellent performance and I highly recommend buying the diesel car rather than the 1.8 V-TEC, even though there's a small price premium. Residuals are likely to be better on the diesel Civic as it has much better mid range power delivery than the 1.8 V-TEC petrol engine, even though both engines deliver 140PS. The 2.2CTDi Honda Civic is supposed to be around 22% more economical than the 1.8 V-TEC engine models, delivering around 39mpg around town and 55.4mpg in the combined cycle fuel economy tests. That said, the fuel economy is poor compared to a small engine diesel like the Ford Focus 1.6 tdci. Fuel economy of my new shape Honda Civic Ctdi is relatively poor at around 44mpg with a mixture of short journeys and motorway runs. Around town, on the urban cycle I achieve around 35mpg - again quite poor compared to Honda's official fuel economy figures. If you have a heavy right foot, then expect to get around 30 - 35mpg if you drive the car in a 'spirited fashion'. It's also worth noting that the car's fuel computer seems to over-read by about 5 to 6mpg, so the car actually does less MPG than the Civic fuel computer average shows! Economy aside, there's no doubt that the diesel Civic has awesome mid range power reducing the need to change down the gears and an impressive acceleration figure of 0 - 60mph in 8.6 seconds, making it a very fast diesel car. If you are seeking performance and driving thrills, then the new Honda Civic Type R with its 2.0i V-TEC engine still offers combined fuel economy figures of around 31mpg and 215g/km of CO2, along with a 146mph top speed! To achieve greater engine efficiency the Diesel Common Rail Injection system runs at very high pressures of up to 1000 bar, using solenoids that release just the right amount of fuel to each cylinder at precise computer controlled timings. Performance & Economy : New Honda Civic Reviews < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Interior Space & Practicality The new UK Honda Civic scores well on practicality. It has a large boot of around 485 litres capacity, considerably larger than the Ford Focus which offers 385 litres. To boost practicality, the new Civic has both 60/40 rear seats and a unique folding rear seat arrangement that allows maximum use of space when carrying large or bulky items. The rear seats drop perfectly flat for large items, giving a huge 1352 litres of boot space - example here. It's not all good news though, as the car's rear seats can be cramped for 3 adults. The car has a large, air conditioned glove box and decent size driver and passenger door pockets. There are some additional storage bins in the driver armrest and two cup holders adjacent to the handbrake. Space & Practicality : New Honda Civic Review < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Safety Review The Euro Honda Civic scores well on safety with a 4 star EURO NCAP rating and an ISOFIX child restraint mechanism. There are 6 airbags with front driver and a passenger airbags, 2 side airbags and curtain airbags front and rear. Please note that a child car seat should never be placed in a front seat of the Honda Civic as an SRS passenger airbag is fitted. Safety : New Honda Civic Reviews < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Running & Servicing Costs Depreciation on the new Honda Civic is fairly low and the car is expected to retain around 50% of it's original value after 3 years. Servicing intervals are annual or 12,500 miles on most models and the 16 inch low profile tyres are around �70 each to buy. With an expected fuel economy of around 45mpg, annual fuel costs should be low. If you want cheap servicing, don't buy a new Honda Civic! With the first service costing £181 and the subsequent service £230 (including VAT), Honda is taking advantage of their servicing monopoly. Get your Civic serviced somewhere else and risk voiding the Manufacturer warranty if non-Handa parts are used. Be warned! The Insurance Groups for the 2007 Honda Civic is 9 or 10 for most 1.8 V-TEC and 2.2 CTDi models. This means cheap car insurance for all models. I paid around �240 in January 2007 for 12 months insurance with Direct Line. Running Costs : New Honda Civic Review < Worse 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Better > Reliability, Faults & Problems The previous Honda Civic has been very reliable and Honda are offering a 3 year, 90,000 mile warranty on the 2007 Civic so they must have a high level of confidence in the mechanicals of the car. Unfortunately, in the 4000 miles covered in my 56 registration Civic, I've had problems with the bump stops on the Front Shock Absorbers and with the fuel filler release which refused to open despite pulling on the release catch in the car. These are both common faults with the new Honda Civic and modifications to fix these issues are available from Honda. The shock absorber problem results in a knocking noise when going over bumps and is a common fault on the new Civic, which is usually covered under the manufacturer's 3 year warranty. The Civic handles well and has sporty performance from its refined and powerful 2.2 CTDi diesel engine, which also delivers 50mpg fuel economy. The car proves comfortable on all but very rough road surfaces. The new Civic's clever design means that it is extremely practical as a family car and all models come well equipped. There's a quality cabin with upmarket materials having been used throughout the range. However, when buying a second hand Honda Civic (new shape) always check for trim and headlining rattles on pre 2007 production cars, particularly if you're looking to buy an ES and EX specification car fitted with the sliding glass roof. The Accord range has recently (January 2006) undergone a minor face lift, I am reviewing the very first Honda diesel model here, launched in January 2004.Having driven the updated model only this week I can tell prospective purchasers that minor but useful improvements have come about largely through the fitment of the six speed gearbox which means that this car is even more refined than before. The new instrument pack is also a treat for the eyes and improves on the original version.IN WHAT CAPACITY AM I REVIEWING THIS CAR?Well, just to surprise you all, this is my regular, every day transport! It is owned by my company and I have now covered 53,500 miles during the course of the last 27 months. With an average of 1980 miles experience each month with this car since its' purchase I guess I know it as well as any.As you may have read elsewhere, amongst my many other duties is that of fleet manager of our small fleet of cars. This is one part of my job that I perform with relish and allows me the opportunity to drive very many other cars too during the course of the year.COSTS Very unusually, for me, costs were my sole reason for choosing this particular car to replace my much loved four and a half year old 105,000 mile Vauxhall Omega V6. Due to it being a company funded vehicle and therefore taxed as benefit in kind on its CO2 emissions, the Omega had become cripplingly expensive to run.In terms of fuel, depreciation and insurance (a competitive group 12 of 20), this car is saving the company a small fortune.In terms of its ultra low 143CO2 g/kg figure, it was until this April, taxed at the lowest 15% income tax group. Only electrically powered hybrid cars will cost less in percentage taxation terms. The Honda Accord therefore very much suits both parties in cost terms!In overall hard total cost terms - pence per mile, my Accord diesel has cost a very reasonable �0.348 per mile to run.PURCHASE COST 9 / 10 During the 27 months that I have had this car, there has been very little movement in the list price. It currently costs �21,130, only �300 more than the list price when mine was purchased in March 2004. I was amazed that the local dealer - Brighton Honda - discounted the car by 5%. Very unusual that on a car just launched. At �19,700 including metallic paint, this was a lot of car, and technology, for the money.Included in the list price, as standard, is just about every creature comfort that you could think of, from a superb multi-disk CD player to full leather electrically operated seats, electric sun roof and head lamp washers. There are few cars equipped as well as this one at any price, let alone at �20,000.THE OPTIONS GAME: 9 / 10 or "How much do I need to spend to make it habitable?"If you are prepared to have a bright red Accord, and it looks good in red anyway, then not one penny extra NEEDS to be spent before putting it on the road. We chose an Indigo Blue (pearlescent) paint finish - primarily because my wife liked it, but also because we wanted the attractive standard ivory leather interior that comes with this colour and makes this car look so much more spacious inside. The metallic paint option was �300.The only other option that I had the dealer put on the car was a full "City Pack" at �329. As with many modern cars, the Accord is ill equipped to take the little knocks and scrapes of city life. The City pack is a set of rubberised "bumpers" which attach front and back and to the sides of the car as well. This was �329 very well spent as 53,000 miles later my Accord is entirely free of any of those annoying dents and pimples from careless door opening - usually by supermarket shoppers.DEPRECIATION 8 / 10 - Always the biggest running cost.Company Car magazine alerted me to a brilliant new car valuation site last month, www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/drive where you can type in your car details and it comes up with an estimated valuation on your specific car.I have read several times that the Accord is a low depreciating model, indeed compared to its major competitors it looses less money. Never the less I was astonished to discover that my high mileage car would cost �13,095 at a Honda dealer to buy and that I would receive a trade in offer for �11,345 on it.FUEL ECONOMY 6 / 10 Average fuel consumption 41.46mpg over 53,000 miles. Oh I can hear some of you sucking your teeth here, asking why I would be rating a spacious five seater car that produces an average of 42mpg so poorly. Driving all of my previous (petrol engine) cars, I have been able to improve on the manufacturers claimed "combined cycle" average by around 5%. Honda was claiming an average consumption of 53mpg for this car.A 20% shortfall in the claimed consumption after the first 6,000 miles was enough to have me complaining to Honda Fleet about my car. Others too found exactly the same thing, they were between 8 and 15mpg short of Honda's claimed consumption figures.We do actually get 50mpg from the Accord in Poland, where the road surfaces have a very shiny (low rolling resistance) surface on them and driving around at 60mph is the norm on A and B roads. Stranger still is that our full speed dash across Europe, mostly on de-restricted autobahn only reduces the overall consumption to 40mpg. By comparison the Omega, once cruising above 100mph would be using twice as much fuel.Our car is run exclusively on BP Ultimate diesel - fortunately also available both in Poland and en-route. The one tankfull of Shell diesel tried, saw an immediate 10% increase in fuel consumption.SERVICE & MAINTENANCE COSTS 7 / 10: are you going to make the dealer rich? With a strange 12,500 mile service schedule, we do not see so much of our dealer - Honda Chiswick. However this is not a cheap car to service, each one costing roughly �50 more than an equivalent (9,000 mile) one on the six cylinder petrol Omega. As an example the 37,500 mile service cost �339.87 including VAT, which did include replacing the front brake pads - for the first time. The rears incidentally have been replaced twice! Unusual a car devouring rear brake pads faster than the fronts.At 53,000 miles the Accord is on its third set of front tyres, they last about 23,000 miles and its second pair of rears, which lasted 47,000 miles.Let the "fun" begin! You want to know what this car is like to live with and to drive and be driven in��.THE EXTERIOR:STYLING 8 /10: A very subjective category here.Now that the current Accord has been on the market for over three years, its novelty has had a chance to wear off. To my, and more importantly, my wife's eyes, this is a very good looking car. Ours is particularly enhanced by the charcoal grey rubbing strips which lower and widen the appearance of the car.OVERALL BUILD QUALITY AND FINISH 7 / 10 Does it look as though it was slung together?No it does not. Indeed its initial appearance flattered to deceive, all of the various fittings, doors, bonnet and boot LOOK as though they fit perfectly, so tiny are the gaps between the panels. Worryingly however, from new, there was a surprising amount of movement (read rattling potential!) in the bonnet, boot lid and fuel filler cap. Our car arrived from the factory with a loose offside fog light unit too.As time went by, at about 13 months and 23,000 miles, the alloy wheels were showing signs of "corrosion", the surface being split and blistered. I am scrupulously careful about avoiding curbs, the blistering was appearing in the centre of the wheels too. Honda replaced all four alloy wheels with new ones - a similar time and mileage later and guess what? The replacements are starting to go the same way! The offside headlamp unit actually started splitting of its own accord (pardon the pun) from the inside and was replaced by Honda under warranty. SAFETY 7 /10 If it comes to the worst, how well are you and your family going to come out of it.This was the one factor that came close to putting us off of buying the Accord at all. It has only a 4 Star Euro NCAP safety rating, this is a poor showing against some major (and cheaper) competitors such as the Renault Laguna and Toyota Avensis.On the other hand, having driven all of the "safer" competition, I came to the conclusion that, most importantly, none felt as dynamically safe - on the road to me as a driver.THE INTERIOR:ERGONOMICS 7 / 10 Before I can start the engine and drive away I need to feel at home in the "working environment". The relationship between the controls and how I, the driver, am able to instinctively operate those controls is, all important. This for me is make or break, before I drive a car, if it does not instinctively "feel" right in this department then I will never like it or ultimately buy it.The Honda is one of those rare cars, for me at least, that I can sit in, achieve my perfect driving position and drive away quite confidently without any reference to the handbook.What looses the last two points here are the infuriatingly fiddly lighting and windscreen wiper control stalks. After all this time, and all those miles, I still have a job fathoming out how the front and rear fog lamps work. Even more exasperating are the windscreen wipers, which are used rather more often than the fog lights. They have no intermittent setting, but an automatic one, using a windscreen mounted rain sensor, instead. This has driven me mad since day one, I long to be behind the wheel of a car with a proper intermittent wiper setting!VISIBILITY: 9 / 10 The Honda is as good as any modern car here, large windows, excellent mirrors, both inside and on the doors. The only complaint here is that those door mirrors very quickly become opaque in wet weather, the front side windows seem to pick up a lot of muck too.Not usually raising mention in my car reviews are the headlights. These on the Honda are worthy of comment as they are simply superb, both in terms of illumination and rangeThe windscreen wipers, whilst fiddly to control, clear an excellent portion of the windscreen - after 52,500 miles I replaced them (�18.80 the pair from the dealer) for the first time last Friday, a two minute job. SPACE: 9 / 10: Honda seem to have gained the knack of designing cars with a lot more interior space than you would give them credit for looking at them from the outside. Our Accord has done long distance journeys "five up" with no complaints even from the central rear passenger.The boot is also deceptively large, after having the Omega for over four years - making those twice annual journeys to Poland; I was expecting the boot to be a problem. It is not, being deep, squarely shaped and very well trimmed, we have never felt the need to compromise on packing for our trips!STYLE 7 / 10: Here is one area where I would like to have seen Honda upgrade the interior on their recently re-launched Accord. I spend a lot of time in a car, and although you could argue am not looking at the interior whilst driving, the style of a car interior is a big draw for me.Ours is a cut above the Accord norm. The Ivory leather makes a huge difference, black leather trimmed Accords which we have been loaned feel like coffins inside by comparison. However, there are far too many different materials used in here and that fake wood on the dashboard and central console is just hideous! I was delighted to discover, upon driving the latest model, that the fake wood has been junked in favour of much more classy metallic look trim panels. MATERIALS, FIT & FINISH 6 / 10: Aspreys or Ratners?What is leather inside the Accord is great - only our front leather seats have been now replaced twice! Yes, you read that correctly, due to faulty die processes, both front seats have been swapped and then re-covered again!Many of the plastics are either soft or brittle. The soft ones mark appallingly, whilst the brittle ones look cheap and flimsy and scratch far too easily. I take pride in the appearance of my cars and at 105,000 miles the Omega looked immaculate inside. The Honda was showing far more signs of wear by the time it had covered 15,000 miles. Hard used company examples will look very tatty indeed by now.AUDIO & CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEMS 10 / 10: Strange grouping?Very much a grouping in this case, the audio and climate controls share the same panel in this car. Both systems are highly efficient and are a major contribution to this cars superb long distance comfort.ON THE ROAD��..��Time to start it up and to offer you a driving assessment.NOISE, VIBRATION & HARSHNESS 9 / 10 Silk purse or sow's ear?This Honda four cylinder diesel truly is a revelation in refinement terms. Under almost all conditions it is as smooth, yet more quiet, than the silky six cylinder petrol engines that I was used to driving during the previous ten years. Even at tick over there is no vibration to be felt anywhere in this car, with the sole exception of the 5 cylinder Volvo S60 diesel, this is the only diesel on the market at the sub �30,000 price level that I can say that for. And NO this diesel does not smoke either!PERFORMANCE 9 / 10 Sh*t off a shovel or a constipated tortoise?This is an extraordinarily, deceptively, swift car. With an anaemic looking 136bhp, I was expecting this 1450kg car to actually be quite slow, especially compared to its 170bhp predecessor. What I had not factored in was the massive amount of torque - twisting power if you like - the 2.2 Honda engine produces a class leading 251lbs/ft of torque at around 2,000rpm. The above may mean little to you - what it does translate to on the road is a car that is an absolute peach to drive. Keep the revs above 1800rpm and above 30mph, the car will simply take off in any gear. In ordinary every day performance terms, the Honda simply annihilates any petrol engined car that I have previously owned, including the quite rapid V6 Cavalier's and Vectra's.This addictive quality may explain the poor fuel consumption! I wish I had a � for every time over the last two years that I have said "I bet that surprised him" when I've left an ostensibly much more powerful, or sporty, car in the Honda's wake!Aiding this performance is a superbly light and precise gearchange, perfectly matching the clutch action. Yes the replacement model may have five gears, but in all honesty I have never felt the need for an extra gear ratio - at 70mph mine is only turning over at 2000rpm anyway! RIDE & HANDLING 9 / 10 The Accord has a superb chassis. This was our biggest surprise on the initial test drive, the ride is cosseting, whilst you travel country lanes in complete safety and comfort at much higher speeds than you have previously been used to.This is a very tyre sensitive car though - it needs the best Michelins to give of its best, my car has never felt the same since swapping for cheaper, but quieter rolling, Dunlops just before Christmas.CONCLUSION - Would I buy one myself and would we want to drive it to Poland in a day?In spite of the many initial niggles with this car, I would unequivocally recommend it. Indeed we have driven the Accord on the 1150 mile journey from Brighton to Mielec in south eastern Poland in a day, on no fewer than three occasions now. That is 18 hours driving - at the end of which, I the driver, have stepped out feeling remarkably fresh.Dodgy leather or not, this car has superb seats - after all those hours "in the saddle" neither my wife nor I have suffered a single twinge.I would also like to mention here that both Honda Fleet and Honda Chiswick have provided customer service way above and beyond the norm - if all customers are treated as well as we have been I am sure that they are promoting tremendous brand loyalty.Despite my initial reservations regarding this car, I would unhesitatingly trade it in for another one - I am sure that we have been somewhat unlucky with our particular car. He certainly gets my thanks for nudging me in the direction of the Accord because I was initially thinking of getting a VW Passat or a Toyota Prius. I bought my 18 month old ......is a storage area and Honda have thoughtfully included a 12v power socket which I use to charge my laptop and phone when on the move. A coin-box/sunglasses holder is also provided along with a cup holder that can hold two cups. There are another couple of cup holders provided for the rear passengers in the middle of the rear seats. It comes with electric windows all round and these can be controlled by the driver using the buttons on the armrest ... The car I bought was an ex demonstrator with about 3000 miles on the clock (nearly new rather than brand spanking new). There really is so much to say about this car. The big thing that I noticed very early on is its quiet, Honda have done away with the annoying piston slap that makes diesels so noisy, so the engine is exceedingly quiet, quieter ......and it is the first Honda diesel so I would hope this will not change given Hondas reliability in other areas, but it is something I will continue to update with servicing reports. The car handles superbly and is quite light on the steering, for a large car its wonderful to park and reversing is a pleasure. The acceleration is wonderful and you really can feel the power of the diesel engine. I switch the control to front screen, then adjust temp to Hi , then switch heated window on- then another switch for the heated mirrors. then when all clear have to switch everything off again and adjust heat to 22'C (my normal setting) THAT is not AUTOMATIC climate contriol. Saab you DONT need to touch ever!! Equipment - Very well equiped - Sat Nav is brilliant. Automatic wipers with a sensitivity ......a lorry for instance. The Honda - you need to intervene with the Auto setting about 10/% of the time. My other gripe is the cruise control - very and I mean VERY slow to respond! Especially when going to resume. Quicker to use the accelerator, then press resume. The Saab cruise is verocious when resuming back to your preset speed. Maybe I've been spoilt with Saab's! The Honda Accord delivers all of these. First it's reasonably fast with a virtually no power band as such. It has plenty of torque spread throughout the rev range. It's not the 0-60 thats quick it's the 30-50 and 50-70 times. This makes for easy overtaking. I had a VW Passat 130bhp diesel before this and that had a very distinct powerband. I also pull a one and a quarter ton caravan with this car. It'll romp up hills at 60mph in ......(which unlike some diesels the Honda will let you do) you see the consumption drop to the low 40's. It handles very nicely too, if you want to push it through the bends you'll be rewarded with a neutral feel, no under or oversteer present. It's very comfortable. The Climate Control is superb. At the beginning of the year i changed jobs and needed to buy myself a new car. I looked at all the usual options: Saabs, BMW's, Volvos, Mercs etc and never even gave the Honda Accord a look in! That was until i started adding all the extras i wanted into the purchase price of the car - I wanted sat nav, leather, cruise control - because i spend a lot of time in the car i wanted it to be done in comfort. The prices were coming in close to 28K which was way out of my budget. I drove past a Honda garage and decided to just ' stick my head in'. I then saw this car in the middle of the showroom and i was blown away! Having done the usual test drive etc i ordered one the following day. 7 weeks later ... Part of this profile states that my budget has a maximum of �8,000.00. The CR-V at �11,400.00 is above my maximum budget. It comes in three- and five-door forms, with the rev-hungry Type-R hot hatch only available as a three-door. Inside, the Civic is fastidiously well put together and all models come with twin front, side and curtain airbags. All models in the range also have ESP stability and traction control. Apart from the basic S models, every Civic comes with all-round electric windows and a clever trip computer, as well as a CD stereo, climate control and alloy wheels. The driver has manual seat height adjustment and a steering wheel that adjusts for reach and rake. Space is good for those in the front, but rear headroom is cramped for adults. No rear windscreen wiper is an irritating omission.The Civic's engines are all responsive and flexible, but the ride and refinement are only average for this class.
