Report this review The new Civic Type R is BRILLIANT. Il first start with the engine, its the best engine in a hothatch ( not the more powerful or torqeiest but its the best), most cars are out of puff at about 6500rpm.. this this goes way past that all the way upto the 8200rpm redline, the gearbox is soo smooth and easy to change gear fast, the ride is firm, but is comfortable on long motorway journeys, theres loads of room in the back, the boot is bigger than all the other cars in its class, the bucket seats hold you in tight. reliability 10/10. no problems. theres pretty much no body role whatsoever, when taking corners at high speed it grips so much, the car is always wanting to be revved, theres loads of headroom and loads of space in the back for people who are way over 6ft. Dont listen to top gear. and why do i say that? because when top gear reviewed this car they said it felt slow, they failed to mention that the vtec kicks in 400rpm earlier, and revs 200rpm more, the power kicks in earlier. also the car only had like 400miles on the clock therefore the engine had not opened up and would not have been producing its max power. Bad Points about this car - Firm Ride, Rear visability ( it is good though when theres a car behind with lights on at night blocks the light out of the mirror) the front seats dont go back to where you put them when moved. and the engine has to be worked hard to get the most from it ( low torque ) Overall great car, its £5000 cheaper than a golf gti, its faster ( as prooved around the top gear track ) its more reliable, its engine revs higher, its got a bigger boot. and in my opinion its better looking that the boring looking golf gti. Report this review Brilliant car wasn't my 1st choice but the other half chose it on looks.It's a real flyer with handling to match just purrs along until you hit that throttle and once the VTEC comes in your thrown to the back of the seat the ride is firm to hard but it's the price you have to pay for what is one of the hottest hatches around fuel consumption is good considering performance. The 2.0-litre engine has to be worked very hard to get the best from it, but the reward is really strong pace. Against Some may find it just too much hard work to get the best from the Type R. The standard model is not very well kitted out and the engine guzzles fuel if you use the performance. It comes in three- and five-door forms, with the rev-hungry Type-R hot hatch only available as a three-door. Inside, the Civic is fastidiously well put together and all models come with twin front, side and curtain airbags. All models in the range also have ESP stability and traction control. Apart from the basic S models, every Civic comes with all-round electric windows and a clever trip computer, as well as a CD stereo, climate control and alloy wheels. The driver has manual seat height adjustment and a steering wheel that adjusts for reach and rake. Space is good for those in the front, but rear headroom is cramped for adults. No rear windscreen wiper is an irritating omission.The Civic's engines are all responsive and flexible, but the ride and refinement are only average for this class. Photograph: Simon Stuart-Miller Why do they always come in white, these hot hatches? Ouch! Even the wheel rims are white. And so white. Whiter not just than snow. Whiter not just than white. But whiter than a soap star's teeth. Normally, a pair of sunglasses are a standard accessory when dealing with a revved-up boy-mobile. But in the case of the ultra-white Honda Civic Type R, they're more a health and safety necessity. Tinted windows don't really do the trick – the dazzle from the bonnet on a sunny day could easily laser your eyeballs. A full crack dealer's blackout appears a more sensible option. There they are in their Golf GTIs and Ford Focus RSs and Toyota Priuses (OK, just kidding about the last one), full of an aching desire to floor the accelerator and break free from… what? Suburban convention? Come on. Is there anything, aside from multiplex cinemas and DIY warehouse centres, more conventionally suburban than a hot hatch?And now Honda is squeezing in on all those clogged arteries of the urban sprawl with its very own fat slice of road cholesterol. The Honda Civic Type R 2.0 i-VTec lacks the iconic frame of the GTI and the noisy styling of the RS. It also lacks their handling. But, as these sorts of cars go, it's not unattractive. Because, let's face it, ugliness is seen as an aesthetic virtue in this area of the car market, a mark of seriousness and authentic sense of purpose.The Type R doesn't convince on this front. The rear spoiler hardly spoils the line of the boot. The front spoiler can barely muster a stroppy pout. Nothing really says, "Get out of the way or I'm going to ruin your life and terrorise your family" the way we've come to expect from a hot hatch. But there you go, times change and new fashions emerge, and we shouldn't necessarily assume that psychopathology should be the only suitable visual language for fast-accelerating hatchbacks.Indeed, I found the brothel-red interior of the Type R almost cosy, as though Cynthia Payne had brought her distinctive eye to the seats and floor carpet. But it's the predominance of the rev counter on the dash that most boldly states the car's, or its notional owner's, true ambitions. It sits centre stage, all but daring the driver to see how far the indicator will swivel round the dial.To what end, though? Where is it leading, this obsession with ordinary small cars being transformed into monsters of the suburban id? I mean, this town rips the bones from your back. It's a death trap, a suicide rap. We've got to get out while we're young. That said, the Type R is a joyride to drive, if a tad stiff in the suspension.
