It’s not that Honda’s new Focus rival doesn’t have the substance to back up its appearance, it’s just that it feels so very special when you first get in and drive off that it particularly takes you aback. Neat touches abound, quality exudes from the controls and the plentiful details appear even more thoughtful because the Civic sits in the C-segment, a class chock-full of cars that, though extremely competitive, can so often be sterile. Of the new Civic’s rivals, only Citroën’s C4 is similarly boldly engineered, and not even that possesses such a ‘wow’ factor. And we rather like this Honda for that. Reaction from interested bystanders, however, is a little more mixed. Some find the Civic’s coupé-esque lines and pilot-focused interior extremely appealing. Others seem a bit deterred by the proportions, overly-reflective front end, and the slightly 1980s-techno feel to it all. True, there’s certainly a Japanese flavour to the Civic, perhaps surprisingly so, given that it has been engineered extensively in Europe, exclusively for sale in Europe, and that it’s built in Swindon. Details that might seem kitsch and dated tomorrow are thoughtful and neat today: the front doors’ free pivoting handles, the gently curved lower section of dashboard with its reflective, hi-fi-esque black coating. But there’s genuine objective merit and engineering purity to the cockpit, as well as surprise-and-delight. The driving controls face the driver, as in the S2000’s cabin, while minor controls are available for all. The upper section of dash displays a glance-able speedometer, further from your eyes than other dials so there’s less road-to-speedo refocusing. The drilled alloy pedals feel good, particularly the floor-hinged throttle, and the sculpted gearlever – part metallic-ish plastic, part rubber – feels great. And despite the initial oddness of some of the buttons – those for heating and ventilation are arranged in a circle, for example – they’re actually very easy to use. In addition to the collection of buttons on the driver’s panel, there are stereo and ancillary controls in the centre of the dash. And, on posher models, which get a large LCD display in the upper dash, there’s a rotary dial with menus and options that are fairly easy to navigate. On some variants, front-seat passengers even get a thermostat on their door panel. On second inspection, our opinion of the Civic is only marginally less favourable. The driver’s seat – leather on the top-spec EX test car we tried - feels supportive, but that headlining is rather close. The latest Civic bucks trends and is smaller in both length and height than its predecessor. It’s a smidgen wider, but obviously that doesn’t prevent the swooping roofline glancing close to the top of the driver’s head. At 5ft10in, I barely had an inch of headroom when in a comfy driving position (although our test car was fitted with optional twin glass roof panels). The driver’s seat, although height adjustable, doesn’t go low enough either, so this situation cannot easily be remedied. Reclining the seat further back does help, and the steering wheel is placed to allow this. The reach adjustment does not have a huge range of travel, but both starts and finishes much closer to your torso than usual, so even when reclined you can bring the wheel within easy twirling distance. In either seating position, the Civic’s steering wheel and the quality of the general driving controls are excellent. The wheel is small, delicate to hold and look at and seemingly constructed from many different parts, including some meshed plastic in the bottom spoke. Sporty? Classy? A hint of both. The steering itself, electrically power-assisted, is light, so there’s negligible feel of the road, but it’s responsive and very direct at 2.29 turns lock-to-lock. At high speeds this equates to a little nervousness, but at lower speeds it’s excellent. Throttle, clutch and brakes have nicely weighted actions, too, and the six-speed manual gearbox – accurate, oily, direct – is fabulous. At launch, that six-speed gearbox is standard with all engine options. Those are a 1.4 (actually 1339cc) 82bhp petrol unit, a 1.8 petrol with 138bhp, and a 2.2-litre i-CTDi turbodiesel, also with 138bhp, which is the only derivative we’ve yet driven. In the Accord, the i-CDTi turbodiesel is a real cracker, and here it displays some similar characteristics – smooth power delivery, good throttle response and strong performance. However, to make it fit into the Civic’s tight engine bay, Honda has had to modify it significantly, and the NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels have suffered. It’s noisy at idle and nearly always audible on part-throttle – not just diesel clatter, but a peculiar whine, overlaid with the turbo’s whistle. It’s not hugely intrusive, but given how quiet this engine can be it’s disappointing that it is only truly hushed at motorway cruising speeds. Otherwise, the latest Civic is refined and comfortable. The ride is sound and there was minimal road and wind noise on the (admittedly smooth) roads where we tried the car. The ride’s relative compliance around town doesn’t hinder it greatly on the open road, either. The Civic steers with precision and corners very neatly, with minimal roll, reasonable agility and adequate body control. It’s not as much fun as a Ford Focus but it leaves a glut of cars – 307, C4, Corolla, Mégane – comfortably behind. Practically speaking, the shrinking of height and length has not hindered the Civic as much as you might fear. Rear-seat passengers get plenty of legroom, and the rear seats split-fold cleverly: as the backs fold forwards, the base automatically dips towards the floor, giving a flat load bay. Furthermore, the rear seat bases can be folded upwards – as in the Jazz - to create blocks of volume in the rear passenger space. Odd, but likely to be quite useful for securing loads. Honda also expects the Civic to be safe, predicting it’ll achieve five NCAP stars, with a strong three for pedestrian impact. All Civics get twin front, front-side and full-length curtain airbags. Other standard kit is reasonably class competitive, although base ‘S’ models could benefit from air-con and CD player to make them really on the money. Further up the range the full complement of goodies comes in: leather, satellite navigation, climate control, parking sensors and the like. But somewhere in the middle, between £14,400 (1.8 SE) and 2.2 i-CDTi Sport (£16,600) is where the real big-sellers will be. Here the Civic will do well, and despite some foibles, it thoroughly deserves to. It comes in three- and five-door forms, with the rev-hungry Type-R hot hatch only available as a three-door. Inside, the Civic is fastidiously well put together and all models come with twin front, side and curtain airbags. All models in the range also have ESP stability and traction control. Apart from the basic S models, every Civic comes with all-round electric windows and a clever trip computer, as well as a CD stereo, climate control and alloy wheels. The driver has manual seat height adjustment and a steering wheel that adjusts for reach and rake. Space is good for those in the front, but rear headroom is cramped for adults. No rear windscreen wiper is an irritating omission.The Civic's engines are all responsive and flexible, but the ride and refinement are only average for this class. Steve Walker reports…You know those TV clips from the 1950s where `experts' predicted how people would be living in the distant year 2000? Families lounged around in aluminium foil jumpsuits, goldfish bowls on their heads, being served meals in pill form by robots that resembled upturned chrome dustbins. This vision bore little resemblance to what most of us were actually doing at the turn of the century but it felt impossibly fresh and futuristic in its time. Fifty years hence, we almost certainly won't be driving around in vehicles like Honda's Civic but right now, the car looks more futuristic than just about anything else on the road.The Honda Civic's concept car looks and sci-fi interior are always going to be the big talking points whenever anyone is confronted with the car but, for the most part, more prosaic factors will end up determining whether it really will strike a chord with the buying public. Factors like the interior space, the versatile rear seating arrangement and the i-CTDi diesel engine that looks destined to account for a significant slice of Civic sales. Prior to actually getting behind the wheel, it was difficult to imagine Honda's 138bhp 2.2-litre i-CTDi common-rail injection diesel engine being anything but a triumph in the Civic. The same unit had already appeared in other Honda models, notably the Accord, where its refinement and linear power delivery saw it hailed as one of the most petrol-like diesels ever produced. Of course, there were also the added benefits of the low CO2 emissions, the strong torque output and the impressive fuel economy we traditionally associate with diesel cars. Expectations had been cranked so high that upon actually getting to grips with the Civic i-CTDi, it was a marginal disappointment. Honda had to make modifications to the engine in order to fit it into the Civic's engine bay and some of the unerring smoothness it displays elsewhere has been lost in the process. Do not despair, however, because the Civic is still one of the quietest diesel family hatchbacks around. It never sounds quite like a diesel, emitting an unusual ticking whine that's higher-pitched that the bass clatter of most oil-burners. Under acceleration, the turbocharger can be heard whooshing in as an accompaniment. The sound is never loud enough to present a problem, even when road and wind noise are so successfully masked in the cabin."The Honda Civic's concept car looks and 1980s sci-fi interior are always going to be the big talking points"Elsewhere, it's good news virtually all the way. Honda claim an outstanding 55.4mpg combined fuel consumption figure for the Civic and CO2 emissions of 135g/km will also attract the attention of company car users. The engine has smooth pulling power from low in the rev range, with 251lb/ft of torque being produced at 2,000rpm. It's capable of an 8.6s sprint to 60mph too, with a maximum speed of 127mph giving it respectable top end reserves. The Civic offers a really good driving position with firm side bolsters in the seat for support and the headrest hovering just behind your cranium. The pedals feel well weighted underfoot and there's a large foot rest area to give the left peg a break from clutching duties. The power assisted steering is very light and direct, greatly simplifying low speed work. That said, there's little feedback and things can get slightly twitchy on the motorway because of this steering sharpness. The gear lever flows around the standard six-speed gearbox with finger-light ease but the action isn't as reassuring and solid as in top rivals. The Civic has plenty of grip and does much to inspire confidence through the corners. Overall, there's no doubt it's up amongst the class best handlers. This is a great-looking car, a real head-turner, but the designers have taken this futuristic high-tech line rather than going for the classically beautiful. The decision does leave question marks about how the ground-breaking look will age but whether or not the years are kind to the Civic, dull rivals like Ford's Focus and Toyota's Corolla will never look as good as this Honda does now. Once you get past that swoosh of light and plastic across the car's nose, the plunging bonnet line and the multi-angled rear end, it's the detailing that stays with you. The triangular exhausts, the split rear windscreen, the concealed rear door handles and the recessed front ones: Honda have pulled out the stops to make this car different. Inside, you're confronted with a daunting array of buttons and digital displays that make you instinctively feel like reaching to the owner's manual, but it's not as complex as it looks. The information you need is laid out in two tiers with the digital speedo and optional satellite navigation system located near the base of the windscreen so your eyes needn't divert too far from the road ahead. The rev counter, fuel gauge and trip computer are lower in a more conventional instrument binnacle. Again, it's the detailing that's most eye-catching; the red starter button on the driver's right, the tactile control dials for the air-con and the sat nav. None of it would feel out of place in an executive saloon and the steering wheel is one of the most comfortable designs around. There are some areas where the Civic doesn't quite live up to the high standards it sets itself. You suspect that some of the plastics and the standard cloth seating trim may not wear too well, while the brittle clear plastic in the centre of the front grille may prove vulnerable to stone chips. There's a large blind spot created by the thick C pillar and the split rear window also restricts rearward visibility. Overall though, the Civic is riddled with great design. It's practical too: the car is actually shorter and lower than its predecessor but it's wider by 45mm and, crucially, the wheelbase is increased to 2,640mm. General interior space is good and there's a massive 485 litres of capacity in the boot. The 60:40 split rear seat backs can be folded down to increase this space or the seat bases can be simply pulled up, producing a separate load compartment between the front seats and the boot. The Civic i-CTDi diesel entry level model is the SE and above this sit the Sport, ES and EX derivatives. There are also sporty three-door Type-S models. Across the board, equipment levels are high and the pricing looks tight considering the quality of Honda's product and their premium aspirations for it. In the end, it's hard to view the Civic's bold design direction as anything other than a success. Some won't like it and the acid test will be how it looks in ten years time but it's easily the most striking car in the sector today. Elsewhere, it has a superb interior, good driving dynamics and is remarkably practical. You’ll find tests of them all elsewhere on this website: 1.4 and 1.6 five-doors; 1.4, 1.6 and rip snorting 2.0 Type R three-doors are all covered. But the new (in 2003) Civic CTDi is something of a departure for Honda. It’s a first attempt at installing a diesel engine. Basically the same Isuzu unit as previously used in the Cavalier, Astra and early Vectras, it displaces 1,686cc. It has twin camshafts, sixteen valves, common rail direct injection and a variable nozzle turbocharger. That little lot churns out 99bhp at 4,400rpm and 162 lb ft torque at 1,800rpm. Not exactly class-leading. But not weedy either. On first acquaintance it turns out to be a fairly gruff and rough little diesel; not smooth and refined like the Civic’s petrol engines. It’s noisy and nothing much happens below 1,500rpm, after which there’s a sudden catapult-like surge as the turbo wakes up and the torque piles on. Obviously you soon learn to manage this state of affairs, but you have to concentrate because if you boot it without having dialled in enough revs beforehand nothing happens for a horrible second or two. In that respect it’s highly reminiscent of the old Isuzu 1.7 litre turbodiesel in a Vauxhall Cavalier I once smoked about in for a while. It’s quite noisy on the motorway too. You only get 25.7 mph for each 1,000 rpm, so cruising speeds aren’t silent, smooth and bang on peak torque – unless, of course, you cruise at around 50mph. But you get used to turning up the radio and blotting out some of the racket. A and B road handling is so-so. The electric power steering is too light at speed and not very informative, but the front end will grip if you want it to. It just isn’t any fun like the Toyota Corolla turned out to be. It is, however, uncannily easy to reverse-park because, even though you can’t see exactly where the car starts and ends, your instincts somehow always get it right. And all the many virtues of the Civic 5-door body remain. It’s very roomy and airy inside with lots of places to put things. It has limo like rear legroom. The cabin is walk through from side to side or front to back with no Ford console in the way like the Focus has. There are five proper lap and diagonal seatbelts to hold everyone in place. And, if you ever feel tired, you can quickly and easily recline the front seats completely to turn the inside of the car into two divan beds. Honda claims 56.5 mpg on the combined cycle, which would be class leading if it was true. I got 44.4 over 242 miles driving at the same speeds as usual. Since ‘Auto Express’ only managed 42.7 mpg, against 45.8 mpg from the faster Focus TDCi, I don’t think many quicker drivers will manage the Civic’s published figure.
