The prices were coming in close to 28K which was way out of my budget. I drove past a Honda garage and decided to just ' stick my head in'. I then saw this car in the middle ....../> Having done the usual test drive etc i ordered one the following day. 7 weeks later the car was delivered. This car doesn't have an expensive badge on the front which may be a problem for some - and possibly me a few years ago when i cared more about what other people thought!! However, get inside this car and you are in the most luxurious car i've been in for 20K. I then saw this car in the middle of the showroom and i was blown away!Having done the usual test drive etc i ordered one the following day. 7 weeks later the car was delivered.This car doesn't have an expensive badge on the front which may be a problem for some - and possibly me a few years ago when i cared more about what other people thought!! However, get inside this car and you are in the most luxurious car i've been in for 20K. The black leather seats - with the 2 seat warmer settings, fully electronic adjustable seat configurations are so comfortable for long journeys. The Sat Nav is a real bonus - you can search for locations by street name, full post code, city, by hotel, by sports ground, by too many options to list here! It has automatic route detours and lets you know about traffic hold ups etc. It is a great piece of kit. The car has a great cruise control system all controlled from the steering wheel. There is a 6 CD multichanger which can be controlled again from the steering wheel. Should you not want to use sat nav all the other multimedia stuff can be seen on the screen. The car is all Bluetoothed up for your phone and it is all voice activated - may sound gimicky but when driving and not having to take your eyes off the road in these letigious days is a must. The sound quality over the speaks is also excellent. Only downside is that you have to load all the names and numbers in the cars own phonebook. There is loads of leg room in the back and the boot is massive. The cars performance is terrific; put your foot down and there is loads of power. i can easily get in excess of 50MPG on motorway journeys - a big deal now with the way fuel prices are going! The engine is really quiet - particually for a diesel.... although it is a bit like a tractor for the first couple of seconds when you first turn the engine over from cold. I have had not a single problem with this car since the day it was delivered. It went in for its first service at 12,500 miles and it got a clean bill of health and no work was needed. As for road handling, the car is powerful and very responsive when you put your foot down. No noticeable over/under steer even at speed. It isn't an exciting drive though - this is a car built for long journeys and comfortable driving rather than giving you all a thrill.In summary: I have recommended this to a number of my friends and 2 have gone and bought one - one the estate version and one the same as mine. Both have been absolutely delighted as have I. This is part of the letter to Blackpool Honda: After visiting your dealership on a number of occasions, I have completed a “Customer Profile” stating my requirements for a car I would like to purchase. ......maximum of £8,000.00. The CR-V at £11,400.00 is above my maximum budget. I know the car was not prepared for sale for your forecourt as it had just come in that morning, and I understand that preparation for its sale would have to be undertook, and I am sure, when it is prepared, it will be to your high standards. I'll just list what appeals, because I have been so uninterested in cars until now that it may be easier to get the point across. 1. This silent diesel engine, pioneered by Honda, is returning over 44 MPG, and it's over 2.2 litres! On long runs it can return 48MPG. 2. The cruise control is fantastic and is a surefire safe guard against the speeding mafia. On motorways and good roads it chortles away gently in sixth gear or, in urban areas, in 3rd or 4th at 30 MPH. 3. The acceleration is almost frightening for those few occasions that you need it, and it pulls in 3rd like my old Peugeot 406 did in 1st. It will cruise at 70 MPH at 1,900 revs and return the above MPGs. 4. It will tow a trailer with two horses in it ... The boot is like a black hole it just takes in everything!The ride itself is comfort personified and the seats give support and a feeling of being at one with the car.Economy is excellent and I have achieved a range of 600 miles on a tank of petrol once the air con is turned off and I use a light touch.The cruise control has calmed my nerves whilst going through 10 miles of average speed control on an M4 contra flow and yet once that is released and the open road beckons the car roars away with a performance I thought was impossible from a diesel engine.The CD player is a 6 CD shuffle and the sound quality is excellent, though I wish there was an I-pod attachment hole. The sat nav is good though the software could do with up dating as I traverse across supposed open fields and my passengers find the touch screen difficult to use when picking out letters.Down sides are minimal, but I was disappointed to find that there was no first aid box even though a compartment was provided. I also found the glove compartment small, and the idea of putting a powerpoint inside the elbow box in the central dais of the car bizarre, especially as no point is available in the rear passenger section. Later on I found the leather on the drivers seat started to crack and wear thin, but this was replaced under the 3 year warranty with no gripes.The final gripe is the lack of a spare and although I acknowledge the foam pump system may be smart, what happens if the tryre shreds? I would rather have a spare.On the plus side lockable storage compartments both in the cabin and the rear of the car give extra security and storage areas keep revealing themselves like the tardis.I would say this car is a must to consider, for people with busy lives, and sales people who carry samples, or even just people whio want to move pets around. Steve Walker finds out.A well-judged styling package, stiffened suspension and generous equipment levels bring a sporty edge to Hondas Accord. Despite this, the Sport GT models strengths remain the refinement and economy of its diesel engine along with its impressive chassis. A Type-R would have been nice but the Sport GT is a markedly more sensible ownership proposition. Get it in white. Type-R is the widely recognised shorthand for indecently fast Hondas. Noteworthy models to carry the famous branding in recent times have included the fiery Integra, various maniac versions of the Civic and the previous generation Accord. Todays Accord was launched in 2002 and as yet, no Type-R version has been forthcoming. Dont hold your breath either because were unlikely to get one at this late stage but Honda have made a small concession to fans of a sporty drive and a feisty exterior. Its called the Accord Sport GT and its a diesel. Honda wants to lever itself upmarket. The firm has been surmising that theres a rosier future to be accessed in the prestige market sectors than in the traditional ones where cut-price offerings from South East Asia are growing increasingly adept and the Chinese will soon be entering the fray, putting a bigger squeeze on the mainstream brands. When the latest generation Accord was launched in 2002, it aimed to leave the Mondeo-dominated medium range saloon market to its own devices, instead intending to gatecrash the lower reaches of the compact executive party. It success in this endeavour has been mixed but at least a start has been made. Brand equity isnt something that can be constructed overnight and the Accord with its quality feel and premium pricing has undoubtedly moved Honda in the desired direction. The Sport GT model looks like another small step up the ladder, bestowing an extra sporty element that the Accord conspicuously lacked."Hondas Accord remains a very competitive product. The Accord GT proves it."If theres a sound that characterises TypeR Hondas, its the shrill metallic crescendo of a performance-tuned VTEC petrol engine as it homes in on its favourite stomping ground, the red line. The Accord Sport GT manifestly isnt a Type-R and if theres a sound that characterises this car, its the muted hum of Hondas i-CTDi 2.2-litre diesel. The unit may lack the visceral drama of Hondas high-revving petrol units but its arguably more impressive. One of the most refined diesels currently available in any market sector, the engine goes about its business with a creamy smoothness that isnt very diesel at all. On paper performance is unremarkable. The 0-60mph sprint takes 9.3s and it will reach 132mph all in but torque of 340Nm from 2,000rpm helps make the i-CTDi Accords relaxed companions. The Sport GT benefits from firmed-up sports suspension which makes better use of the excellent grip and balance of the Accord chassis than that standard set-up. The steering feels alert and accurate while the taut body control makes the Accord Sport GT an enjoyable car to hurry along. The lack of wind and road noise in the cabin ensures that the full benefit of that hushed engine is felt. The Accord Sport GT is no performance car but that hasnt stopped Honda trawling through the parts bin in an effort to make it look like one. Indeed, from a visual perspective, only the Type-R badge is missing, with the Sport GT cutting a seriously aggressive figure on the road thanks to smoked headlights, foglights, a rear boot spoiler and a very fetching dark chrome finish for the door handles and front grille. There are also 17" alloy wheels for the saloon version with the Tourer estate getting 16" versions. The standard Accords sharky good looks have been enhanced in some style and Honda are offering a special Premium White Pearl paint option thats exclusive to the Sport GT as a finishing touch. White, it seems, is rapidly becoming the fast car colour du jour. Being a Honda, we expect certain standards of build quality from the Accord and it doesnt disappoint. The interior is solidly put together, the dash design is neat and the controls are very simple to fathom at a glance. The only real drawback is the quality of some of the plastics which dont quite live-up to the billing that Honda gave the Accord as a challenger to the compact executive elite. Its small details like this that will need to be sorted if the Honda brand is to gain an equal footing with the likes of BMW and Audi. That said, the Sport GT does a good job of masking any shortcomings in basic materials quality with some natty sports detailing. Theres a carbon-effect inlay for the dash and the instruments illuminate in red which successfully raises the tone. Accord Sport GT customers arent faced with a minefield of options to tiptoe through. Theres one engine and the standard specification is high enough to leave the options list looking distinctly under populated. Theres voice-activated satellite navigation, cruise control, a premium audio system with a 6 CD autochager and a Bluetooth hands free telephone system. Tourer models, meanwhile, get rear privacy glass. All of the above comes at a very reasonable £20,767 for the saloon model so while the Sport GT may not be particularly quick, its unlikely to be hanging about in showrooms for long. Fuel economy is a definite strength of Hondas 2.2-litre i-CTDi engine. The unit turns in a sparkling showing of 49mpg on the combined cycle which will do wonders for your bottom line over the typical ownership period. The 145g/km CO2 emissions will prove similarly cost-efficient and with Hondas reputation for reliability, it seems unthinkable that the maintenance costs will be anything other than reasonable. Buyers in the market for a quick family saloon or estate car are unlikely to be seduced by the Accord Sport GT. Beneath the cars racy exterior, its basically just another diesel Accord. The appeal of the Sport GT is centred around the all-round competence of that Accord i-CTDi package with the added bonus of the Sport GT trim level which sharpens up the styling and enhances the driving experience while piling on lots of extra equipment. The Sport GT may well be as close to a Type-R version of this Accord as well get. The fact that it still falls short by a considerable distance is less important than the cars slick styling, low running costs and the enjoyable driving experience. The Accord may be getting on in years but the Sport GT demonstrates that it remains a competitive product.
